Murphy excited by coaching challenge

Geordan Murphy says he is excited by the challenge of his new coaching role at Leicester Tigers.

After retiring from playing at the end of last season, former Tigers captain Murphy joined the club’s caching staff in the summer and is already hard at work during pre-season.

Murphy, who made 322 appearances for the club and was capped 72 times by Ireland and twice by the British & Irish Lions, admits he is now starting at the bottom of the ladder in terms of coaching.

But he says the quality of the staff and players at Oval Park is helping him to settle quickly into his new role.

“I am really excited about it all,” says Murphy. It is a good young squad and there are a lot of talented players in there.

“I am very lucky. It is the best place to be coaching because the guys are so talented and know the game that it makes my job that little bit easier.”

He adds: “The other coaches have been good to me so far. They showed me what I needed to do. They have been patient because I have been asking all sorts of questions but I have to get it nailed down.

“I am at the bottom rung of the ladder and if I want to progress then I have to listen to Richard Cockerill, Paul Burke and Richard Blaze.”
