Sevens captaincy is a privilege, says Steele

Scott Steele says it will be a privilege to lead Leicester Tigers at the JP Morgan Premiership Rugby Sevens.

Steele has been named as captain of Tigers’ 12-man squad which takes on Newcastle Falcons, Sale Sharks and hosts Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens on Friday night.

The action kicks-off at 7.15pm and is live on the new BT Sport channel. Tigers will wear their new alternate kit for the first time.

“I am really looking forward to it,” says scrum-half Steele, who represented Scotland Under-20s at the Junior World Championship in France in the summer.

“It’s a privilege to be named captain by the coaches. I’ll probably be more a captain that leads by example than giving the big speeches.

“We have got a young side but there a few other older lads as well so I think it will be good experience.

“It’s really good for young players to come in and play at that level against some good players,” added Steele, who played for Tigers in last season’s JP Morgan Premiership Rugby Sevens

The 20-year-old made his Aviva Premiership debut as a replacement against Newcastle in February 2012 and also came off the bench in that season's LV= Cup semi-final at The Rec.

Last season, he made a number of appearances for the Tigers Development XV and says he is learning all the time from the other scrum-halves at the club, Sam Harrison, David Mele and Ben Youngs.

“I train with the other scrum-halves every day so it’s good for me as a young player to pick their brains on technique and stuff,” he says.

“It’s really good when you have got a British Lion in Ben Youngs, who is at the top of the game who can give you advice. You’ve also got a senior player like David Mele, who has played a lot in France, and Sam Harrison, who has played almost 50 times for the first-team and is really experienced.

“It’s good for me and for my development to work with them.”

Tigers have been forced into a change to their squad for the JP Morgan Premiership Rugby Sevens at Franklin’s Gardens on Friday night.

Michael Noone has withdrawn from the squad after injuring his ankle in training. He will be replaced by 17-year-old Academy winger/full-back David Williams.
