Coaching role has Murphy buzzing

Geordan Murphy admits he got "a real buzz" out of his first experience of coaching a Leicester Tigers team.

Murphy took charge of the Tigers at Friday night’s JP Morgan Premiership Rugby Sevens at Franklin’s Gardens.

Tigers secured victories over Sale Sharks and hosts Northampton Saints to finished second in their pool and book a place in the JP Morgan Premiership Rugby Sevens finals at Bath’s Recreation Ground this Friday.

“I got a real buzz out of it,” Murphy says: “I was proud of the way the guys played – they worked so hard for each other.

“We were the underdogs in every game. Not many people would have put us through to the finals with the inexperienced side that we had but they are all good players. Give them a little bit of belief and they were great.

“I haven’t really coached sevens before and haven’t played a lot in recent years. A lot of the guys have played sevens recently and they really helped me out.

“For a lot of the young guys it was a new experience, playing at Franklin’s Gardens, with a pretty vociferous home crowd who were getting behind the Saints.

“They didn’t let it faze them. They played really tough rugby and it was impressive."
