Tigers so close to Sevens glory

Leicester Tigers fell just short of a first JP Morgan Premiership Sevens title with defeat in the Final against Gloucester on Friday evening.

Tigers beat Sale and Northampton on their way to securing qualifcation for finals night at Bath’s Recreation Ground and clocked up further wins over Worcester and Harlequins to top their half of the draw and qualify for the final.

After slipping to an early 17-point deficit against Gloucester, a converted Rhodri Davies try gave Tigers some hope and then David Williams added another to cut the gap to just five points.

Gloucester, though, soon stretched out to 24-12 leaders before Tom Pointer set up a thrilling finale with the try for Leicester.

The Cherry & Whites, though, secured the 24-17 victory and lifted the opening silverware of the season.

Davies and Stef Jones got two tries each in an impressive opening win over a highly-fancied Worcester Warriors side with Tigers recording a 35-12 victory. Ollie Turton was the other Tigers try-scorer.

Tigers secured a place in the final with a last-gasp win over Quins, snatched with a converted Williams try in the last move of the game.

Quins led 12-5 at half-time, with Jake Farnworth on the mark for Tigers, and despite another Davies score, they remained 17-12 in front going into the last seconds of the game before Williams produced a thrilling finish and the conversion guaranteed a place in the final for the first time.
