Leicester Tigers welcomed this season's player sponsors for an afternoon with the first-team squad at Oval Park on Tuesday.

After enjoying lunch, the sponsors heard from director of rugby Richard Cockerill, met the players and watched them at work in training as well as seeing behind the scenes at Tigers in the company of chief executive Simon Cohen, executive director Peter Wheeler and past president Mike Harrison.

New signings Jamie Gibson, Neil Briggs and David Mele were among the players introduced to their player sponsors, while returning internationals Toby Flood, Tom Croft and Manu Tuilagi also shared their thoughts on the season ahead and their hopes for the club.

Andrew Vartan, of stockbrokers Ravenscroft Ltd who sponsor Tom Croft, said: “This is a great opportunity for sponsors and their families and friends to come and meet the players on a social basis.

“They have a lot ahead of them with the season about to start, but to get the opportunity to sit down and get to know them and talk about things other than rugby was a great opportunity.”

Scott Hamilton will be sponsored by Cambridgeshire-based Flex-Able Group for the third season, and said: “The boys enjoyed it – a few sausages, a bit of steak, nice weather and the chance to meet our player sponsors.

“I’ve had my sponsor for a couple of years and it’s always good to see him and they get to watch training afterwards.”
