Big hitters take Tigers to cricket win

Scott Hamilton saluted the efforts of his Leicester Tigers colleagues as they claimed victory in the charity cricket match in aid of the Matt Hampson Foundation and Lord's Taverners at Grace Road on Sunday.

An enthusiastic crowd enjoyed the match and the sunshine – as well as the commentary of George Chuter on the balcony – at the home of Leicestershire County Cricket Club, with Tigers coming out on top against a Matt Hampson/Lord’s Taverners XI.

Former County and England players Paul Nixon and Darren Maddy were among the Matt Hampson XI which also featured Tigers favourites Craig Newby, Freddie Tuilagi, Tim Stimpson and Harry Ellis, and former Leicester City and Scotland footballer Matt Elliott.

They set a target of 182 in 25 overs, which Tigers overtook with three overs to spare.

Hamilton said: “It was another really good day with a good crowd and the guys really enjoyed it.

“Jamie Gibson batted really well and Joe Cain had some big hits, including a six right over the bouncy castle!

“My favourite play of the day, though, was Freddie Tuilagi bowling Manu with his first ball at his brother. And Manu refusing to walk, just standing there like WG Grace and hoping to be given a second chance! It was funny, even if it was a wicket for the opposition.

“But it was a good team effort, some of the young guys like Joe Cain, George Tresidder, Perry Humphreys and George Catchpole did a good job.

“The guys had some fun, in the name of a good cause, and no one got injured, so Cockers will be happy too. And it’s another trophy for the cabinet!”
