Goneva happy to adapt for the team

Vereniki Goneva has started the season with two tries in two games but says he is learning all the time as he adapts to the needs of the team.

Goneva played most of last season on the wing, making a big impression during his first campaign and scoring crucial tries in the Aviva Premiership semi-final and final.

Injuries in the back-line this season have meant that he has moved to centre on occasions, including for Saturday’s game away to Bath

Goneva has played much of his rugby for Fiji at centre and says he is happy to play in any position for the good of the team.

“I am learning a lot of new things and working hard in training and in the games for the team,” says Goneva. “I like playing at centre or wing, I don’t mind. I just want to play and to help the team.”

Goneva’s try at The Recreation Ground helped Tigers fightback from an 18-point half-time deficit to claim a losing bonus point.

It was his second try to be nominated for the Aviva Premiership Try of the Week. His first, the bonus-point try at home to Worcester Warriors, was voted the best score of Round One.

But he was quick to praise the skill of Adam Thompstone in offloading out of a tackle tight to the right touchline to set up his try at Bath.

“It was very good play from Adam Thompstone,” says Goneva. “I tried to support him and it was very good work from him - I’m very thankful to Thompstone for the pass.”
