Morris named in Ireland training squad

Niall Morris's early-season form has earned him a spot in the Ireland training squad for the autumn internationals.

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has named Morris in his 42-man group to prepare for the internationals against Samoa, Australia and New Zealand in November.

It comes after the 25-year-old 's impressive start to the season for Tigers and his try-scoring exploits that helped Emerging Ireland to a second-placed finish in the IRB Tbilisi Cup.

Morris, who will link up for the two-day camp on Sunday, said: “It's a training camp but it is good to be recognised and pleasing that I'm in their thoughts.

"It was nice to be involved with Emerging Ireland and this is another step on from that."

The squad will assemble at Carton House for Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

It is Schmidt's first Ireland training squad, and he said: “Selection was difficult as it's the first time we have had to narrow our focus a bit and determine a cut off point for players. A number of selections were very tight which is positive.

“The group is predominantly 'tried and proven' but with some newer faces as well. It's an opportunity to get to know the players as well as an opportunity to have a look ahead and start to get a little bit of organisation done for the Guinness Series.

“There is no doubting the challenge that autumn presents but we're looking forward to getting a little bit of a head start this weekend.”
