Scotty's Little Soldiers visit Tigers

Scotty's Little Soldiers, one of this season's official club charities, will be special guests of Leicester Tigers at Welford Road on Saturday.

They will be staging a matchday collection around the stadium and delivering the matchball just ahead of kick-off in the Aviva Premiership derby between Tigers and Northampton Saints.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers is dedicated to supporting the children of men and women killed while serving in the British Armed Forces.

Inspired by the experience of army widow Nichola Scott, the charity honours husband Corporal Lee Scott's memory – as a loyal soldier and a loving father – and provides a way for the public to show their appreciation for the individuals who make the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.

Scotty's launched in August 2010 after Nikki witnessed her young children, Kai and Brooke, struggling to cope without their daddy.

"When I took the children away on holiday about nine months after Lee had been killed, I watched Kai smiling and having fun in the pool with his cousins and I suddenly realised I hadn't seen my little Kai laugh like that in months,” says Nikki.

“That's when I knew I had to do something to help him and other children who had sadly lost a parent. So, with my family and friends, we set up Scotty's Little Soldiers, the charity for children of the fallen.”

Funds for the charity are raised through events, donations, merchandise and corporate sponsorship.

The charity provides treats, trips and activities for the families of the fallen with the aim of offering a respite, however brief, from the daily ups and downs of coping without a loved one.

Children receive letters, cards, birthday presents, Christmas gifts, tickets and vouchers at tough times of the year, as well as help towards clubs, activities and holiday breaks.

Scotty's Little Soldiers currently supports 108 children of the fallen and have been able to purchase holiday homes in Great Yarmouth and Blackpool. These are three-bedroom lodges filled with everything a family could need on a break away from home.

The Scotty members and their families can use these lodges free of charge whenever they are in need of time away from all the struggles of life without a loved one. The charity is able to pay any travel expense and they also receive a £100 gift voucher when they arrive.

The charity’s next goal is to purchase a third holiday home in the south of the country.
