A record-breaking year for the Prima Tiger Cup 2013 kicked off with the opening festival played in Norfolk this weekend.

Supported by Prima Solutions of Loughborough, the Prima Tiger Cup is a free-to-enter tournament for under-10s teams and Sunday’s opening leg attracted eight teams from Norfolk and around 200 parents who braved the weather conditions to cheer on their players.

Swaffham Rugby Club acted as the opening hosts as the Prima Tiger Cup got under way.

Teams representing Holt, Diss, Lowestoft & Yarmouth, North Walsham, Swaffham, West Norfolk, Wisbech and Wymondham were divided into two pools and provided some entertaining and tight games in the opening festival of the season.

It was North Walsham and Holt who secured a place in the knockout stages to be played at Welford Road later in the season as they came the group stages and then won qualifying matches against Wymondham and Wisbech respectively.

Leicester Tigers head of community, Scott Clarke said: "We started the day in difficult, wet conditions but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm and determination of the eight teams and they al enjoyed the first of this year's Prima Tiger Cup festivals.

“All of the Norfolk clubs did themselves proud with their conduct and effort on and off the pitch. After two very competitive leagues and hotly-contested finals, Holt and North Walsham were worthy winners and we are sure will represent Norfolk rugby well in the Super 16 stages."

A record number of 65 clubs and more than 1,200 players in the under-10s age group have signed up the Prima Tiger Cup this season.

The tournament features five qualifying festivals around the Tigers region with the second event based at Tamworth RFC next Sunday (October 27). The remaining festivals are based at Lutterworth RFC, Newmarket RFC and Mellish RFC.
