Tigers take tag to hundreds of schoolchildren

Leicester Tigers are introducing rugby to thousands of schoolchildren across Leicestershire as part of the club's Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme.

Tigers rugby development officer Will Hoey this week began introducing the tag form of the sport to schools in the Hinckley area.

There are eight schools signed up for the programme, which include Townlands, Burbage Junior, St Peter’s Earl Shilton, St Peter’s Hinckley, Richmond, Barwell Academy, Westfield Junior and Sketchley Hill. More are welcome to take part.

The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme aims to introduce young people to rugby through tag.

It provides five weeks of coaching and teacher training, grassroots club links, plus resources for the school to continue to play rugby in the future before finishing with a festival at a local club in week six.

The programme has recently finished working with schools in the Leicester Forest area. It finished with a festival at Leicester Forest RFC, which was struck by some difficult weather.

But there was a lot of good rugby on display, despite the pouring rain, with plenty of tries.

To conclude the Leicester Forest programme, a transition fun day on Sunday, October 20 featured 30 young players from schools joining a tag rugby event outside of school alongside some of the club’s current members.
