Visitors take on The Big Boot

French visitors from the Union Sportive de St Pierre rugby club shared matchday with Leicester Tigers on Saturday and even got to follow in the footsteps of rugby heroes on the Welford Road pitch.

A group of under-16s players were hosted by Market Bosworth and Market Harborough rugby clubs over the weekend as well as taking part in matchday at Tigers.

They took part in The Big Boot half-time entertainment in front of a 24,000 capacity crowd at Welford Road.

Tom Newton, from the Harborough club joined the French club at Welford Road and said: “The boys from USSP had an unforgettable experience at Tigers, participating in the Big Boot contest despite swirling wind and rain. I think we entertained the crowd!

“There were a few valiant and acrobatic attempts to judge the elements and get under the high ball. Some attempts were more successful than others but we all enjoyed it.

“USSP would like to thank the groundsmen and hope they won’t mind that one or two handfuls of the hallowed Welford Road turf will probably find their way back to France.

“Special thanks also to the Under-16s sections from Market Harborough and Bosworth who entertained all of us over the weekend and who will receive a warm welcome when they pay a return trip to France.”

The Big Boot has proved a popular addition to a Tigers matchday and there are now only two opportunities left this season to take on the challenge.
Introduced at the start of the season, the Big Boot is a half-time competition that sees groups of fans try to catch a rugby ball pumped high into the Welford Road sky for the chance to win a cash prize.

The prize fund started at £250 on the opening day of the season and we've added £50 to the jackpot every week it has remained unclaimed.

The jackpot is now at £500 ahead of Friday’s LV= Cup game against the Ospreys and to win the prize fund each member of a 10-strong team has to successfully complete a high catch fired by the Big Boot.

The Big Boot is now fully booked for the remainder of the season apart from the Heineken Cup fixture against Ulster Rugby in January and the Aviva Premiership game with Saracens on the weekend of April 10.
