Tigers tributes for Remembrance Day

Figure image
Players and supporters of Leicester Tigers and Ospreys combined to show their respects for the Remembrance Sunday commemorations at Welford Road on Friday evening.

The crowd joined both teams for a Minute’s Silence ahead of kick-off in the opening LV= Cup match of the season, while supporters showed their generosity throughout the evening with donations to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Also, at half-time supporters gave a very warm round of applause in acknowledgement of the name of the 17 former Tigers who were killed on active service in the First World War.

The announcement, made by matchday announcer Martin Ballard, will form part of a BBC Radio Leicester series called ‘World War One At Home’.

Tigers’ official historian Stuart Farmer researched the names of more than a complete team of players killed during World War One and they will be the subject of one of the features in that series which will be broadcast by BBC Radio Leicester and used by BBC Online as part of the centenary commemorations in 2014 as well as being archived in the Imperial War Museum.

Thank you to all the supporters who supported the Poppy Appeal and also showed their respect to the names of the 17 Tigers players who lost their lives during the First World War.
