Jaya and her Cubs

Figure image
This Wednesday the park in central India in which our new tiger family is living is again open after three months of heavy monsoon rain.

The park is looking lush, green and verdant, and there is water everywhere. However Jaya, mother of Johnno, Murphy, Crumbie and Trya, has the same problem of all parents at this time. She has teenager tigers - one son and three daughter - on her hands and they’re hell!

They eat a lot, need constant attention, are always bickering with each other and spoil each other’s chances of catching dinner. They also like nothing better than a good play fight.

Luckily for their mother, they live in one of India’s finest wilderness landscapes; tall and dank Sal forests, rocky hills including the Badhaini hill - which they all like hiding away in - and the lush green meadows of Rajbehra, where their favourite food, spotted deer, graze in large herds and the occasional larger sambar deer wanders out to drink.

Chasing these creatures is great fun – but their mother Jaya is much better at catching them than the kids are – even though she is constantly teaching her cubs how to hunt.
