Premiership Rugby supports typhoon appeal

Premiership Rugby and Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) have launched a text-to-donate number so rugby fans across the world can contribute to the Philippines Typhoon Appeal.

Anyone wanting to donate £5 to the appeal can text RUGBY to 70000. Texts are free but donations will be added to the bill and must have bill payer's permission.

The situation in the Philippines is becoming clearer and is showing the true scale of the desperation with more than 13 million people affected. There are four million people who have been forced from their homes and around a million homes damaged or destroyed.

Wayne Morris, community and CSR director at Premiership Rugby, said: "I don't think anyone who saw the pictures from the Philippines could fail to have been affected by what they saw and members of the rugby community are keen to help in any way they can.”

DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed said: "We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion from the UK public, the response has been incredible. However, with 11 million people affected and four million displaced from their homes, the need for urgent support is vital.

"Through DEC agencies we are getting clean water, medication, sanitation and temporary shelter materials immediately to people. We must also start to look at the future as sadly we know it will take months and years to rebuild people's lives.”

What the money donated could buy:
£25 Water purification tablets for 10 families for a month
£50 Feeds a family for two weeks
£100 Emergency shelter and bedding for one family

DEC brings 14 leading UK aid charities together in times of crisis: ActionAid UK, Age International, British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Plan UK, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision; all collectively raising money to reach those in need quickly.

Donations can also be made at any high street bank and at post office counters. Or donate at www.dec.org.uk/ or 0370 60 60 900.
