Kitchener lands two player awards

There was plenty to smile about for Graham Kitchener after Sunday's 41-32 victory over Montpellier in the Heineken Cup.

Kitchener was named the Goldsmiths Player of the Month after winning the supporters’ vote ahead of Tigers teammates David Mele and Ed Slater.

The Tigers second rower was announced as the winner during half-time against Montpellier and was presented with his prize, a Tag Heuer Aguaracer watch, after the final whistle.

And he added the Heineken Man-of-the-Match award as well after another impressive performance in the second row helped Tigers on their way to a crucial victory in Europe.

Kitchener said: “It’s really nice to win the Goldsmiths Player of the Month by the supporters and I’m grateful to those who voted.

“Things are going okay at the moment and we have been picking up some good results as a team.”

Kitchener said Tigers were pleased to take five points from the game but added that there were areas to work on ahead of the return fixture at Stade Yves du Manoir on Sunday.

“It was a tough game, out there,” he said. “We were very pleased with the first 25 minutes but our defence was not as good as it should have been at times.

“Miles Benjamin and Vereniki Goneva looked really dangerous, we had a cutting edge in the backs, we had a decent set-piece platform so we need to build on that performance and turn it into an 80-minute performance.”
