Goneva adds another important try to his tally

Vereniki Goneva added to his tally of important Leicester Tigers tries with his last-gasp effort against Montpellier on Sunday.

Goneva was on the mark for Tigers in both the Aviva Premiership semi-final and final last season as Leicester secured a record tenth title.

The Fiji international returned from injury last weekend to open the scoring at Welford Road against Montpellier in the Heineken Cup before popping up in the last minute for his dramatic score in the reverse fixture. And he had the presence of mind to get as close to the posts as possible to make Ryan Lamb’s decisive conversion that much easier.

But Goneva, Tigers' leading try-scorer this season, refused to take the plaudits after the final whistle sounded on a dramatic Pool 5 clash at Stade Yves du Manoir.

“The try was down to hard work from the boys,” said Goneva. “It was good play in the build-up, nice hands from Ed Slater and Marcos Ayerza and we managed to get over for the try.

“I knew it was late in the game and we were behind by six points. I had to make it easier for the kick because I was near the edge of the pitch. I tried my best to get nearer to the posts and to try to make the kick easier.

“Before we played the players and coaches said it was a big opportunity for us in our Heineken Cup group. We are happy but we have to carry it on.”
