Students hit top spot in the Big Boot board

Students from the University of Leicester overcame appalling weather conditions to move joint-top of the leaderboard in the Big Boot at Welford Road on Friday.

At half-time in the big match between Leicester Tigers and Bath Rugby, the group of 10 students tested themselves against the Big Boot – which fires rugby balls high into the Welford Road sky – as well as the rain and slippery conditions, and made three catches to equal the feat of groups from Brooke House College and Barton Hockey Club earlier this season.

The students did create a landmark of their own, though, with three consecutive catches during their attempt.

Sam Daniels, a third year Politics student, was one of the successful catchers and said: “I didn’t think I would be nervous but when it came to it I was. Two of my mates made clean catches just before me too so the pressure was on! It was great fun and I thought we did all right.”

The Big Boot prize fund started at £250 on the opening day of the season and Tigers have added £50 to the jackpot every week it has remained unclaimed. On Friday that mark reached £800 for a full set of 10 clean catches.

Brooke House College from Market Harborough made three catches in the early-season fixture against Newcastle Falcons, a mark equalled by Barton Hockey Club at Christmas, though with the help of a ‘team catch’ at their 11th attempt.

The Big Boot is supported by NX Logistics and is available only to group bookings, and participants must be aged 16 or over. All participants receive a Big Boot T-shirt as a souvenir.
