Six Nations is important time, says Williams

Owen Williams described the Six Nations as a big period in Leicester Tigers' season after being named the Goldsmiths Player of the Month.

Tigers return to league action this Friday night with a trip to Worcester Warriors (7.45pm kick-off).

They are likely to be without their England and England Under-20s internationals at Sixways, and Williams says Tigers are braced for a huge battle.

“Worcester are going to come out all guns blazing,” says Williams. “They need to win games. We know it’s not an easy place to go.

“It’s a big period for us while the England boys are away but we are not looking too far ahead. We know Worcester are going to fight for everything and we have to be switched on.”

Supporters voted Williams the Goldsmiths Player of the Month for January ahead of Jordan Crane and Louis Deacon.

The 21-year-old received his award after full-time in Friday’s LV= Cup game against Bath and admitted it was an unexpected honour.

“I’m chuffed to win it,” he said. “I didn’t expect the award at all, to be honest. Deacs and Craner have played well so it was unexpected.”

Tigers’ involvement in this season’s LV= Cup ended with the 35-17 defeat but Williams says it has been invaluable in the development of some of the club’s younger players.

“It’s a great learning platform,” said Williams. “It’s good for the boys to get exposure, to play in front of the TV cameras and against quality opposition.

“You can train all you want but it’s different in a game and you just want to get out there and play. I thought George Catchpole played really well on the wing, Tom Price did well in the second row and it’s been good for the younger players during the earlier games in the competition.

“I thought we did well in the first half. We played in the right areas but gave away soft tries which kept them in the game. It was tough for us in the second half and we couldn’t get a foothold in the game.”
