Slater honoured by captain call

Ed Slater says it was an honour to captain Leicester Tigers for the first time in Sunday's 20-15 Aviva Premiership victory over London Irish.

And the second-rower said he was helped in his new role by the natural leaders within the team.

“If you spend time thinking about the people that have done that job and the people who have represented the club and captained the club, it is a huge honour,” said Slater, after Tigers’ third win in a row lifted them into the Aviva Premiership top four.

“I love playing for the club and love being part of the team. To be able to captain the team, what can you say about that?

“I had a lot of leaders around me. When you have players like Louis Deacon, Ben Youngs, Dan Bowden and others, they have a lot to say as well.

“Ben Youngs’ leadership out there was massive for us. And Dan Bowden’s knowledge of the game is brilliant. His organisation of the forwards when we were blowing was huge for us.”
