Matera learning all the time with Tigers

Pablo Matera says he is learning all the time from the coaches, back room staff and players at Leicester Tigers.

Despite winning 11 international caps, the 20-year-old had never experienced a professional club environment when he arrived at Tigers earlier this season from Argentina where he played amateur rugby.

Matera says the Oval Park environment provided a huge contrast to the two-nights-a-week training he was used to back home.

But Matera says that everyone at the training ground has helped him make the transition.

“I have never been in a professional club,” he says. “It is my first experience. Every day here is different. Every day you learn something.

“Not only do you have the rugby periods but you have someone like Richard Blaze or Geordan Murphy that you go to and work with and learn new skills.

“Every time I have the chance to play I have to learn the moves. I have the support of Craner, Waldrom and Salvi. They are always giving me advice. It is very helpful.

“When we train back home we have one conditioner for the whole team. They are very helpful. Here Alex Martin (Tigers head of strength and conditioning) is always with me saying ‘today we are doing this, today we are doing that’. I just follow what he says and that is perfect for players to use their time as efficiently as possible.”

Matera made his fourth start in Tigers colours in Sunday's 41-18 victory over Newcastle and scored his second try for the club at Kingston Park, the crucial bonus-point score. You can watch his try again on the Tigers YouTube channel by clicking here

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “Pablo has great raw ability, he was outstanding in the World Under-20s and then went straight into the Test series with Argentina.

“He’s got lots of potential and he’s learning all the time, but physically and attitude-wise he is great, you saw that with his try right at the end of the Newcastle match last weekend."
