Following recent fixtures against England, Wales and Canada representative sides, the Leicester Tigers Academy face another international challenge next month with a trip to Portugal.

On Friday, April 11, the Tigers Academy face Russian champions Krasny Yar at Browns Sports & Leisure Club in Vilamoura as part of the Algarve Rugby Festival.

Krasny Yar are also scheduled to face a British Army team during their stay in Portugal, with live music and entertainment also on the bill as part of the festival.

Tigers have enjoyed recent matches against England and Wales Under-18 sides as well as Canada Under-20s at Welford Road, and Academy manager Neil McCarthy is looking forward to seeing the players test themselves again in Portugal.

“We take it as a compliment that the national representative squads want to organise fixtures against us and that we’ve been invited to take part in the Algarve Rugby Festival at Browns,” said McCarthy.

“The name of Leicester Tigers is known throughout rugby and we’re delighted to be able to represent the club at the Algarve Festival. The facilities at Browns are excellent and this trip provides an opportunity for a new experience for our players.

“We believe that a range of fixtures outside of our usual opponents is very important for young players in their development and we want to see how they react outside their comfort zone from time to time.

“Playing against a Russian club side is something new for us and it will be interesting to see how we go against them and how Russian rugby is developing.”

Rugby is among Russia’s growth sports, with a professional domestic league, and the national team reached their first Rugby World Cup in 2011.
