Tait already focused on pre-season and beyond

Mathew Tait has already set his sights on next season after the disappointment of defeat in the Aviva Premiership semi-finals.

Tait says he is actually looking forward to the start of pre-season training and the chance to lay the foundations for another tilt at silverware next year.

The full-back was among a lengthy list of senior players in the Leicester Tigers squad who missed large chunks of the season through injury.

Indeed, Tait was absent from the first half of the campaign with an ankle problem and had to wait until Christmas to make his first appearance.

Now he is aiming to get a good summer of work under his belt in preparation for next year.

“Cockers said after the game that we have had a decent season and that injury-wise, we have had to pull together as a group,” said Tait.

“Key guys have been missing for large parts of the season but ultimately we have come up short.

“We have a bit of time off now. Guys leave for pastures new, new guys come in and we will regroup again and go again next year.

“If we’re honest, Saints and Sarries have been the two best teams in the league. On our day we know we can beat anyone but we came up short.

“I would like to start the season, next time. I had no pre-season this year, so in terms of rugby I was a little bit behind. You feel like you’re playing catch-up.

“There have been elements of the season I’ve been really pleased with and elements that need work. I would dearly love to have a pre-season. It’s an opportunity to refresh over these next few weeks and fire in again.”
