Leicester Tigers favourites Craig Newby and Jeremy Staunton have been back on their old stomping ground to lead a series of Welford Road Masterclasses.

The ex-international pair have been providing guidance in attack, defence and kicking, showing young players the techniques they learned through their long and successful professional careers.

Newby and Staunton joined forces for the Welford Road Masterclass – Attack on Tuesday, Newby led the defence session on Wednesday and Staunton returns on Thursday to take the Welford Road Masterclass – Kicking.

The players on Tuesday’s Masterclass also had a Q&A with Newby and Staunton, the former Tigers and Ireland fly-half. Those on the Wednesday Masterclass were treated to a tour of the ground and a talk on Tigers’ history by former captain and coach Ian ‘Dosser’ Smith.

Newby, the former Tigers and All Blacks back-rower, said some of the skills and techniques his Welford Road Masterclass – Defence looked at included defensive systems, line speed and the breakdown. Click here to watch Tigers' Vine videos from the session.

“It’s been really good,” Newby said. “They really want to be here and want to learn and want to get better at rugby.

“We have had a great bunch who have been listening and working hard.”

Players have travelled from across the Tigers region and further afield to take part in the Welford Road Masterclasses, including from Cheshire, Gloucestershire and Sussex.

Harry Edmunds, 12, who plays at Selby RUFC, made the 250-mile round trip from his home near York on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Welford Road Masterclasses – Attack and Defence with dad David, who was Geoff Parling’s player sponsor for the 2013/14 season through his company Dep Arts, and mum Jemma.

Jemma said: “He’s had a great time. I’ve never seen him go to bed as early as he did after Tuesday’s Masterclass, he was so tired!

“It’s been really special using the changing rooms, running through the tunnel and playing on the hallowed Welford Road turf.

“As a Tigers fan and a rugby fan he dreads the summer months when there’s no rugby but it’s nice that they are receiving such really good coaching.”

A limited number of places are still available on Thursday’s Welford Road Masterclass – Kicking. Call the Tigers ticket office on 0844 856 1880 (option 2) before 8pm tonight (Wednesday) to book a place.
