Beth's charity challenge in aid of Scotty's

George Chuter joined fundraiser Beth Wood at the home of Leicester Tigers for the start of her two-day trek in aid of Scotty's Little Soldiers.

Beth is walking 35 miles from Welford Road to Butts Park Arena, the home of Coventry RFC. The 18-year-old will walk via 12 war memorials en route, including those at the Welford Road Cemetery, Victoria Park and St George’s Church in Leicester and Coventry’s War Memorial Park.

Beth’s fundraising effort is in memory of her dad, Staff Sergeant Glyn Hole, who died in a road traffic accident near his base in Aldershot in 2010.

Tigers mascot Welford was on hand to wish Beth on her way and Chuter, who supported Scotty’s Little Soldiers during his benefit year, joined her for the first hour of her walk.

It is part of Miles for Smiles 2014, in support of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, which encourages people to make a journey to Coventry Memorial Park and Coventry RFC for this Saturday using any method of travel other than by engine-powered vehicle. Fundraisers can choose their route, distance and travel method, including walking, cycling and skateboarding.

“I’m a bit nervous,” said Beth, of Abergele in North Wales, said. “Scotty’s Little Soldiers are unbelievable. I can’t put into words what they do and how much they do for me – the emotional support, the holidays, everything.

“Nikki Scott and the team are amazing. They can’t do enough for the children.”

Scotty’s Little Soldiers is an official charity of the Leicester Tigers. The charity is dedicated to supporting the children of men and women killed whilst serving in the British Armed Forces. It provides treats, trips and activities for families of the fallen with the aim of offering a respite - however brief - from the daily ups and downs of coping without a loved one.

Inspired by the experience of army widow, Nichola Scott, the charity honours husband Corporal Lee 'Scotty' Scott's memory - both as a loyal soldier and a loving father - and provides a practical yet personal way for the public at large to show their appreciation for those brave individuals who make the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.
