Internationals reach end of their season

Leicester Tigers wing Blaine Scully and new signing Robert Barbieri were among the try-scorers on the final full weekend of summer international rugby.

Scully, who scored a hat-trick of tries in last week’s defeat by Japan in the Pacific Nations Cup, scored twice as the USA hosted Canada in his home town of Sacramento, California.

The USA Eagles came from 17 points down to win 38-35 against their rivals, with Scully scoring in each half.

Back-rower Barbieri scored a late try for Italy but could not prevent a 26-23 defeat by Japan in Tokyo as the Azzurri headed home without a summer win. Leonardo Ghiraldini, who joins Barbieri in moving from Treviso to Leicester this summer, was also in the starting pack.

Ben Youngs, Manu Tuilagi and summer recruit Freddie Burns started England’s third Test in New Zealand with scrum-half Youngs in particular catching the eye of the pundits despite a 36-13 defeat.

Geoff Parling withdrew with a hamstring injury after being named in the starting team, while Ed Slater captained England to a midweek win over Super 15 side the Crusaders but watched from the stands in Hamilton on Saturday.

Logovi’i Mulipola started at loosehead prop for Samoa as they celebrated an 18-13 victory over Fiji in Suva.

England Under-20s celebrated a second successive Junior World Championships title with a 21-20 verdict over South Africa in New Zealand on Friday. Henry Purdy, who was also a member of the winning squad in 2013, was an unused England replacement in the Final, with clubmates Harry Rudkin and George Catchpole in the travelling squad.

The international contingent now begin their close-season break before reporting back to Tigers.
