Welford Road is set to stage a Tuilagi family reunion on the opening day of the new Aviva Premiership season when Leicester Tigers host Newcastle Falcons.
The Falcons, led by Tigers legends Dean Richards and John Wells, are the first visitors to Welford Road in the new season on September 6, and could include summer signings Alesana and Andy Tuilagi in their line-up.
With younger brother Manu in the Tigers ranks, it promises to provide an exciting start to the new campaign.
“Our supporters have very fond memories of Alesana Tuilagi playing for the Tigers and they will be looking forward to welcoming him back to Welford Road, alongside his brother, and Dean and Wellsy,” said Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill.
“Alesana was a big player for us over a number of seasons and he’ll be keen to show that he is still an important player in this league.
“It will be a new experience for him to come to Welford Road and prepare with the away team, and also for Manu to line up opposite, but he’s bound to have a good reception from the supporters who remember how much he did for Tigers and it should be a great occasion to kick off the new season.
“There is a lot of hard work for us to do before then, but the announcement of the fixtures always helps to focus minds for players and supporters. I’m sure it will be another big season for the Aviva Premiership and the competition gets stronger every year.”
The opening home game of the season will again feature the popular Tigers In The Park with events and attractions for all the family in the build-up to kick-off.
The fixture against Newcastle Falcons has not been selected for live television coverage so Welford Road is the only place to see all of the action. Kick-off is at 3pm on Saturday, September 6.
European fixtures and LV= Cup matches are due to be released in the next few weeks.
