Hectic start to Academy season

The Leicester Tigers Academy players have had a busy start to the season with fixtures for all age groups against domestic and European competition.

Tigers opened the season with a nine-try win over Driffield in a fixture played as part of the Academy’s pre-season training camp. Paolo Odogwu and Charlie Thacker scored two tries each.

They then travelled to Cardiff and took the lead in the first half with a try and penalty from full-back Will Sutton. But, despite tries in the second half from Jamie Jack and Ben White, Tigers were beaten 36-22.

A young squad suffered a 49-7 defeat against Irish visitors Leinster Under-20s in their first game of the season at Oval Park with George Murrin scoring the only try for the hosts.

This week Tigers were at the University of Leicester Sports Ground for a 21-12 victory over London Irish, with the senior coaching team of Richard Cockerill, Paul Burke, Geordan Murphy and Richard Blaze all in attendance. Sutton and Odogwu were again among the try-scorers.

Next week Tigers travel to France to take part in an early-season tournament with ASM Clermont Auvergne, Munster and Georgia.
