Big effort from the squad - Cockerill

Richard Cockerill says the whole Leicester Tigers squad can take credit for making it two wins from two games at the start of the season.

Trailing until just before the hour mark at Sandy Park on Saturday, Tigers came back to win 24-20 against Exeter Chiefs to follow up ethe bonus-point win over Newcastle Falcons on opening day.

Tigers director of rugby Cockerill said: “Exeter are a good side, they took their chances and got in front and it became a real arm wrestle. But I thought we coped well.

“The win is great but we need to keep working on it and need to get better. Any time you get an away win is a good win and you know other sides will come here and get turned over by the Chiefs. They had a big start last week and this was their first home game so it is a tough day for us. I’m very happy with the four points.

“It’s been a big week for the squad and they should all take credit for the result. I thought it was a good team performance.

“Anthony Allen came in for his first game of the season and was fantastic, Geoff Parling had played only 15 minutes in the pre-season before playing today. That eas a big scrum at the end with Riccardo Brugnara playing in his first Premiership game getting the push on their tighthead and winning the penalty that allowed us to clear our lines. We had good impact off the bench too and that was important.”

Tigers now face a second successive away game with a trip to unbeaten Bath on Saturday before the return home to face London Irish on September 27.

“It’s a hard game next week,” said Cockerill. “Bath have had two good wins so far and we know we have to keep improving.

“We need a bit more accuracy at times. Those little things in isolation do not mean a lot but together they can add up and hurt you.”
