Hooker Youngs sidelined after shoulder surgery

Leicester Tigers have confirmed that international hooker Tom Youngs has had surgery on a shoulder injury following Saturday's defeat at Bath.

Youngs was used as a second-half replacement in the Aviva Premiership Round 3 fixture at The Recreation Ground but left the field on the hour mark after picking up the shoulder injury.

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “Tom popped the AC joint in his shoulder and he had surgery on Monday. He is probably out for three months which is obviously disappointing because he is a world-class player.”

Cockerill also revealed that Niall Morris suffered an ankle injury at Bath, while Geoff Parling is following the necessary protocols after taking a blow to the head in Saturday’s fixture.

He added that Anthony Allen and Manu Tuilagi are “improving all the time” after their withdrawal from the Bath trip and there was some significant news on the return to fitness of a number of others who have been sidelined by injury, including summer signings Michele Rizzo, Brad Thorn and Laurence Pearce.

Italian prop Rizzo and former All Blacks second-row Thorn are approaching fitness again, while back-rower Pearce came through 50 minutes in his club debut in the Development XV during Monday’s Premiership ‘A’ League fixture against Worcester. Seremaia Bai, Blaine Scully, Miles Benjamin and Christian Loamanu are also close to a return to action.
