Leicester Tigers officials, coaches and supporters will make a special trip to Ystradgynlais in south Wales on the way to Saturday's European Rugby Champions Cup match against the Scarlets.

Ystradgynlais is the hometown of Owen Williams and the local club has built a relationship with the Tigers, with young members becoming regular visitors to Welford Road matchdays. Players from Welsh club also travelled to Gloucester earlier this season to support the Tigers in Aviva Premiership action and met some of their favourite stars after the match.

After the European Rugby Champions Cup draw paired the Scarlets with the Tigers, Ystradgynlais Rugby Club were approached by the Leicester Tigers Away Supporters Club who wanted to see the town where Williams grew up.

As a result, this Saturday (October 25) is now the Welsh Tigers Day at Ystradgynlais and will see the launch of the Welsh Branch of the Leicester Tigers Supporters Club.

The town will welcome around 100 guests from Leicester, many of whom will be visiting this part of Wales for the first time.

“We have met a number of Ystradgynlais groups who have been to Leicester to watch Owen and we’ve been amazed by the number of rugby supporters who travel from all over Wales to watch the Tigers,” said Leicester Tigers head of brand Chris Rose.

“At a recent game we met a family from Llandeilo who are frequent visitors and they joked that there were so many people there from Ystradgynlais that we are either twinned with Leicester or have set up the Welsh Branch of the Leicester Tigers Supporters Club. Well that has now become a reality.”

Ystradgynlais, who play in Division 3 West Central in Wales, are looking forward to a special day on Saturday and a rare chance to welcome Tigers supporters and officials.

The Welsh Branch of the Leicester Tigers Supporters Club is to be launched at 2pm, with a junior exhibition match followed at 3pm by Ystradgynlais II versus Cmwgors, and then a reception before the supporters leave at 6pm for the European fixtures at Parc Y Scarlets.

All Tigers supporters will be made most welcome throughout the afternoon. The rugby club is in Ynyscedwyn Road, Ystradgynlais, Powys, SA9 1BH.
