Toulon head to Tigers as French league leaders as well as defending European champions after taking over the leadership of the Top 14 on Saturday with a 27-19 victory over Clermont.

Winger David Smith scored two tries for Toulon, for whom France international centre Maxim Mermoz was also on the scoresheet.

Nicolas Sanchez, the 30-times capped Argentina international, started the game at fly-half and kicked the rest of the Toulon points.

Clermont scored two tries of their own through Fritz Lee and Aurelien Rougerie but it was not enough to secure even a losing bonus-point.

The victory saw Toulon, the defending European and Top 14 champions, leapfrog Clermont into top spot in the French league.

Tigers and Toulon meet at Welford Road this Sunday (kick-off 5.30pm) in European rugby’s premier club tournament.
