Learn from Tigers on Matchday Coaching Clinics

More than 200 young rugby players enjoyed Matchday Coaching Clinics with Leicester Tigers on Sunday and places are already in big demand for the rest of the season.

Tigers Matchday Coaching Clinics are supported by energy efficiency experts Mark Group and on the morning of the European Rugby Champions Cup match against French visitors Toulon, groups worked on their individual and team skills with Tigers coaches, met a player for a question-and-answer session and then joined a 22,000-strong crowd at Welford Road for the big match.

Players from the Eversfield Prep School in the West Midlands were among those joined Sunday’s Matchday Coaching Clinic and met Tigers and England Under-20s forward Tom Price to talk about life as a professional. They even managed to follow in the footsteps of rugby legends by getting on to the Welford Road pitch to have a team photo taken with Tigers club captain Ed Slater at half-time.

Mark Smining, the school’s Director of Sport, said: “It was a wonderful session this morning and for a lot of the players this is their first match, which is great. The inspiration of having the coaching and then the game will spur them on to want to do better.”

A group from John Spendluffe School in in Lincolnshire also enjoyed their day with the Tigers and assistant headteacher Rob Thornalley said: “The guys could not wait for this experience and to be out on the pitch is something that I think will live with them for a long, long time.

“At the clinic it was all handling skills but they also did work on some support running lines. They certainly improved throughout the practice so it was really good.”

Another group, from Huntingdon RFC, also joined Tigers captain Ed Slater on the pitch for a photo and their head coach Greg Rice said: “We’ve had a brilliant day. What was great is that the Matchday Coaching Clinic coaches tailored the session to the needs we had identified beforehand. They went through a load of drills and some matchplay, which really was time well spent.”

Places on remaining Matchday Coaching Clinics are in high demand after sell-outs for the home games against Saracens and Wasps recently and another large turn-out for Sunday.
