Captaincy was a huge honour, says Youngs

Tom Youngs says it was a great honour to captain Leicester Tigers in the Aviva Premiership win at Newcastle Falcons.Youngs wore the captain’s armband for the first time in his Tigers career and led the team to a 16-12 victory at Kingston Park.   He follows brother Ben Youngs, who has been the on-field skipper for large periods of the season, in captaining the team. And afterwards Tom said: “It was a massive honour to captain the side and there was a lot of pride in that.   "It is something that me and my brother have done, but our father (former Tigers scrum-half Nick Youngs) has not done, so we have got one up on him there!   "It's a great club and I love it dearly and it's a great honour to captain the side.   "We knew it would be tough at Newcastle and we didn't help ourselves at times, but we showed character and got the win in the end and now we are right up there.   "We wore them down and there are plenty of games that we have played in where the last 10 minutes are vitally important. All the work you do in the previous 70 minutes comes home to roost.   "We never panicked. We kept chipping away and we knew we would get the opportunity, which we took when it came.”   Attention for Tigers now turns to the LV= Cup semi-final against Exeter Chiefs at Welford Road on Sunday (1pm) while Youngs last night linked up with the England squad as they prepare for Saturday’s Calcutta Cup clash at Twickenham (5pm).   Youngs said: “"We are right in the mix now in the league and we are all very excited, from the young guys to the senior guys.   "We have got five league games left, starting with Exeter after the LV= Cup spell, and we are just where we want to be – in with a good shout.”   Tickets to the LV= Cup semi-final against Exeter Chiefs are available now from the Welford Road ticket office, by calling 0116 319 8888 (option 2) and online by clicking here.
