Children from Forest Lodge Primary School will be at the Aviva Premiership Final at Twickenham on May 30 after taking part in the Something To Chew On programme with Leicester Tigers. As well as having the opportunity to watch the season’s showpiece fixture as part of an 80,000-plus crowd, the group will be play a tag-rugby game against another school on the pitch at English rugby’s national stadium.
Premiership Rugby’s Something to Chew On programme in association with the Supporters Club, BT Sport’s charity initiative, is a project aimed at teaching seven and eight-year-olds about their own health and well-being with a rugby focus.
According to government figures, more than a fifth of 4-5 year-olds, a third of children aged 10-11 and two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese. Obesity tends to track into adulthood, so obese children are more likely to become obese adults.
The government’s national ambition to combat childhood obesity is a sustained downward trend in the level of excess weight in children by 2020.
The interactive programme takes a rounded approach to teaching children about leading a healthy lifestyle. This is done through a combination of classroom and practical sessions over a period of five weeks with the schools and is aimed at Year 3 and 4 children.
