Our Tigers ABC to Z series reaches its conclusion today with the letter Z.Z is for Zurich Premiership: Tigers were crowned champions of England for a fifth time in 2001, when they lifted the Zurich Premiership for the first leg of a treble.
Tigers’ 51-7 victory at home to Newcastle Falcons in March secured the title with two games to go and the silverware was paraded around Welford Road after beating Harlequins 37-5 thanks to tries from Austin Healey, Geordan Murphy, Pat Howard, Neil Back and Leon Lloyd.
Tigers eventually finished eight points ahead of second-placed Wasps and secured a hat-trick league titles to follow the successes of 1999 and 2000.
Z is for Zurich Championship: The Zurich Championship was introduced midway through the 2000-01 season, which involved a play-off between the top eight teams.
Tigers beat London Irish 24-11 in the home quarter-final before booking their place in the Twickenham final with a 17-13 win against Northampton in the semi-final, also at Welford Road.
Tigers eased to a 22-10 victory against Bath at HQ, with tries from Martin Johnson, Healey and Winston Stanley.
It completed the second leg of the treble, with Tigers adding the Heineken Cup in unforgettable style at the Parc des Princes six days later.
Z is for Zaltzman: Danny Zaltzman, a lock, is the only player whose surname starts with the letter Z to have played for Tigers in the club’s 135-year history.
He was in the match squads for the first four games of the 1999-2000 campaign, which began while the Rugby World Cup was in full flow, making two starts and one appearance from the bench.
Zaltzman started the season opener, a 46-24 defeat to Northampton, and the second game of the campaign, an 18-3 win against Sale in which Tim Stimpson kicked all the points. He was an unused replacement in the 34-6 defeat away to Gloucester in Round 3 before making his third and final appearance from the bench in a 31-30 win at London Irish.
He also had spells with Saracens, Bedford and Worcester.
