We all know there are some who are unlikely to shed a tear at Tigers missing out on the top table at the end of last season. Not one of our rivals, though, can come close to the club's consistent record of success.Looking through the history books, for example, it is remarkable how consistent Tigers have been in their glory-hunting. Very little has been done as a one-off over the last 135 years.
Consider first the club’s record in the Midland Cup when it was the only meaningful judge of form in the game. No leagues, no Europe, no national knockout, in the early days there was ‘only’ the Midland Cup. Tigers took a while to get going in the company of clubs like Coventry, but once they’d had a taste of cup success, they obviously though it wasn’t particularly worth sharing around. Leicester went on to win xx times in xx years before being obliged to look elsewhere for silverware.
When the national knockout finally came to fruition, and Leicester finally made it all the way to Wembley, it became almost an annual event. And in winning the trophy three times in succession 1979-81, they kept the cup in perpetuity.
When Tigers conquered Europe, they became the first team to retain the title a year. They’ve been in five European Cup Finals in 20 years of competition, a feat that actually does not readily get the praise it deserves.
Tigers won the first Courage League title, but when the competition became known as the Premiership, it was Tigers who won four years on the bounce. The league title has rested at Leicester 10 times in all. And don’t forget the nine Finals in a row.
At the end of last season someone pointed out to The Tig that Louis Deacon had won six Premiership titles before his enforced retirement – a total matched by Saracens, Harlequins, Northampton, Sale and Newcastle combined.
What is it they say about form being temporary and class being permanent? There is an argument at Tigers for form being nothing of the sort.
