Lichfield Ladies scored 10 tries in a 66-22 victory over Wasps in the first-ever Women's Premiership fixture to be held at Welford Road, home of the Leicester Tigers, on Sunday.Played after Tigers had beaten Harlequins in the second round of the Aviva Premiership season, the fixture represented part of the Leicester Tigers Foundation’s commitment to women’s and girls’ rugby.
Supporters from Tigers and Quins stayed behind to watch the women’s game as well as the Rugby World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Australia shown on the big screens in Final Whistle.
England players Emily Scarratt and Natasha Hunt from Lichfield Ladies, though unable to play, were presented to the Tigers crowd at half-time in the Aviva Premiership fixture and spoke to the live TV cameras covering the Tigers match for BT Sport before cheering their team-mates on and acting as water-carriers for their game.
Wasps Ladies were first on the scoreboard with a try but Lichfield came back with four of their own, scored by Carys Williams, Amy Cokayne and Harriett Mills (2) with Sarah Nicholas adding two conversions and two penalties in the first half.
Wasps scored a late penalty as they trailed 30-10 at half-time and continued their momentum with an early try in the second half.
Lichfield, though, responded with five more tries from Williams, Jas Coyne, Hannah Phillip and Molly Morrisey (2) plus a penalty try.
Their rivals claimed the last score of the game with a late try but Lichfield secured a convincing win.
Lichfield’s head coach Rich Bennett said: “This was our best performance of the season by far. We played excellent rugby for long periods throughout the game in exactly the style we want to play.
“We worked extremely hard at the breakdown and in dominating that area of the game we earned lots of possession from which we created plenty of scoring opportunities.”
Lichfield are fifth in the Premiership which includes teams from Aylesford Bulls, Bristol Ladies, Darlington Mowden Park Sharks, Richmond Women, Saracens Women, Wasps Ladies and Worcester Ladies.
