It was a Tigers Family affair for Matt Smith as three generations of his family shared in the Aviva Premiership win over Wasps at Welford Road.Matt became a dad for the first time when his son Monty was born on the opening weekend of the season and, as a result, he missed the trip to London Irish.
But Matt returned to the matchday 23 for the game against Harlequins and made his first start of the season in Sunday’s 24-16 win against Wasps.
And joining him at Welford Road was two-week-old Monty as well as his dad, the former Tigers captain and coach Ian ‘Dosser’ Smith.
“Monty beat me to his first Tigers game by a week!” said Matt, who was a regular visitor to Welford Road as a youngster to watch his dad playing and captaining the first team.
“I was three weeks old when I came to my first game but he was two weeks old, so he beat me!
“We went to the shop and bought him his first Tigers babygrow.
“My dad already wants him to play in the backrow and not in the backs! I’m not sure what his mum will think of that!”
Smith said Tigers are building nicely after recording their third win from three games with the victory over Wasps.
“Things seem to be going in the right direction,” he said. “We are three wins from three and each week we feel we are getting better. We are building on things and the culture is growing.”
Tigers are back at Welford Road on Friday, November 13 when Stade Francais are the visitors in Europe’s Champions Cup. The game is included in Tigers season tickets. Match tickets are available now on 0116 319 8888 (option 2), online by clicking here and from the Welford Road ticket office.
