Telusa Veainu paid tribute to his Leicester Tigers teammates after being named the Goldsmiths Player of the Month. On the occasion of his 25th birthday, Veainu was announced as the December winner during half-time of Saturday’s Aviva Premiership victory over Newcastle Falcons.
He celebrated in style, scoring his sixth try for the club in a 22-10 win.
Tonga international Veainu admitted it was a surprise to win the Goldsmiths award ahead of Dan Cole and Tom Youngs and thanked teammates and supporters for helping him to settle quickly into life at the club.
“The award was a surprise, with guys like Tom Youngs and Dan Cole up as well,” he said. “I am just happy to play off them. When they go forward, I thrive off their energy.
“As I have said before, these individual awards are very nice but it is a team sport. You can’t play on your own. It takes 14 other men to defend, to attack and to get over the line. I have been quite lucky to be on the end of their hard work.
“I am absolutely loving it. We can’t do it without the supporters, especially when the games are tough, they really help get us through. When their energy lifts we lift as well.”
Veainu follows Sam Harrison, Fraser Balmain and Matt Smith, the previous winners of the award this season.
The Tigers Player of the Month award is supported by Goldsmiths, the largest prestige and luxury jewellers in the UK, who are also the official East Stand sponsors and official timekeepers.
