Well done to city's new title winners

Figure image
We can be as tribal and as one-eyed as any sport supporters, but there is still time to salute our neighbours at Leicester City.

At Tigers, we know the exhilaration of a title win – while each year you miss out makes the yearning to get back to the top of the podium even stronger – and we can certainly appreciate how City’s players and supporters are feeling right now.

The title celebrations will go down as the longest party in the city’s history and everyone is determined to have a share in it. Who said the Richard III spotlight would never be repeated?

Less than two years ago, the world’s spotlight shone brightly on Leicester with the discovery and reburial of a King. Now, the spotlight is shining brightly once again after City’s Premier League title win.

The Tig congratulates the city’s footballers and won't be alone in carrying our red, white and green colours into their blue-hued party, while also noting some common ground between our team and theirs.

Look, for instance, at the headline-grabbers in that City team this season – Vardy, Mahrez and Kante. Striker Vardy came from lower league status while Mahrez and Kante were imports that barely raised a headline on arrival but have turned into top-class performers at the top of the table. Sound familiar? How about the likes of Slater, Mulipola and Ayerza as a direct comparison? There are others too because striking gold in hidden seams has been part of the Tigers’ success over many years.

The consistency of men like Vardy and Drinkwater over a gruelling season has propelled them into the international frame in a way we have seen many times in Tigers colours over the years.

City boss Claudio Ranieri’s belief in ‘the sum of the parts’ rather than individuals is a philosophy that everyone on this side of the Aylestone Road can recognise too, while a passionate support and an enviable home record is another shared strength.

It has taken a while for City to get the praise they deserve this season, which has often felt the case for us at Tigers too.

Above all else, The Tig has taken particular pleasure in watching a team playing their game, sticking to their guns, believing in their gameplan and not being bullied out of it either by the opposition or external influences. That has struck a particular chord.

Well played City. Dilly-ding, dilly-dong.
