Sporting capital most certainly on the map

I've got a few words for anyone who said Leicester was known only for "crisps and Gary Lineker" before Leicester City FC won the Premier League this season. How about "Leicester Tigers"?

Or maybe Martin Johnson, Austin Healey, Neil Back, Martin Corry, Dusty Hare, Geordan Murphy, Clive Woodward, Paul Dodge, Tim Stimpson. Or Richard Cockerill, Graham Rowntree, Darren Garforth or Dean Richards?

Maybe you’ve heard of Manu Tuilagi, or his older brothers Freddie, Henry and Alesana?

Or other world-class stars who have called Welford Road home – including Joel Stransky, Brad Thorn, Lote Tuqiri, Josh Kronfeld, Pat Howard and Jean de Villiers?

The Tig is willing to make a concession to non-rugby fans here, so perhaps you’ve heard of Richard III, a monarch so attached to the city that he’s spent the last 500 years there?

There is no diminishing the achievements of the Leicester City, rising from relegation candidates to champions of the world’s most lucrative football league in the space of one year. But it is unnecessary writing of history to say there is nothing else to capture the headlines in Leicester.

Remember that even Riyad Mahrez, voted by his peers as football’s player of the season and one of the ‘gold-dust’ performers in that football team, is on record as saying he thought Leicester City was a rugby team when they were mentioned as a potential destination in his career when he was still in France.

So, while congratulating the fairytale football story, let’s not forget the achievements of a rugby team whose 10 league titles in less than 30 years of competition and appearances in five European Cup Finals have helped to put the city on the map. And let's hope the success of both clubs continues for many more seasons to come.
