'Confident' Evans on the mark for Under-20s

Will Evans says he has taken the confidence gained with Leicester Tigers this season into the World Rugby Under-20 Championships with England.

Tigers flanker Evans scored a debut try for England Under-20s in the 44-0 win over Scotland in Manchester on Saturday to maintain the team’s perfect run in the opening week of the pool stages.

Evans made his debut for Tigers in an Aviva Premiership win over Gloucester in April and scored twice in four appearances during the season, including a run-out in the semi-final at Saracens.

“I didn’t expect my Leicester Tigers debut to come so early,” said the 19-year-old from Norwich.

“But it gave me the confidence that I could mix it with international players, knowing that I have played in the Aviva Premiership.

“I didn’t get to play for the Under-20s at the Six Nations but it was around the time I was getting into the Leicester squad. After I made my debut I thought maybe if I could get a couple more games I could start to push for an England place.

“A lot of the guys here are ones I have come right the way through with from the under-16s, plus a couple of new faces in there. There is a great atmosphere in the squad.”

Evans had support from his parents, who had driven up from Norwich to Manchester, as he claimed a debut try in a win which kept England top of Pool B.

“It was a big moment for me – like my first try for Leicester this season. It was a very pleasing moment,” he said.

England’s next game is against Australia on Wednesday evening at the AJ Bell Stadium, home of Sale Sharks.
