Tigers take Rugby Camps to Japan

Leicester Tigers have kicked off a series of Rugby Camps and charity events in Japan.

The Umakana Yokana stadium in Kumamoto, an area that experienced a series of earthquakes last year, has been the venue for the Tigers community team.

The trip started with a coaching clinic at the stadium as part of a charity event for the school community.

Three, three-day camps will follow across Japan, with Tigers delivering an academy-style rugby programme with built-in English language sessions with the support of Tigers’ partners on the ground General Education Consultants GEC World.

The three-week rugby programme culminates in a final one day coach education session in Saitama where the coaching team will expand the ideas and practices used in developing the game and young players looking to press forward into the professional game.

Tigers will also be delivering an early insight into the RWC 2019 with an open evening for businesses around Tokyo with Tigers, England and British Lions legend Rory Underwood.

Tigers’ trip to Japan follows Rugby Camps visits in recent years to Kuala Lumpur, Jersey, Holland, Italy and Virginia in the USA.

Scott Clarke, head of community and global partnerships at Tigers, said: “We were amazed at the interest, enthusiasm and culture for the game of rugby in Japan during our first visit in Easter this year.

“It's great to be back there and continue building the rugby camp activities and widening the connections through the game for Tigers with players, coaches and rugby interested businesses in Japan.

“The RWC 2019 will be a massive opportunity for all involved in rugby to create something special across Asia and we are delighted to be there helping raise the profile of the game in Japan whilst building a foundation for Tigers future links.”
