Newcastle Falcons have confirmed the signing of Tonga international back-rower Opeti Fonua from Leicester Tigers in time for the start of the new season.
Fonua arrived at Tigers in the summer of 2015 and made eight appearances for the club last season, including the semi-final of the European Champions Cup against Racing 92 in April.
Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “It is unfortunate that Opeti did not have an opportunity to get a run of games for us last season but now he has the chance to take on a new challenge with the Falcons and we wish him well for the future.”
The 30-year-old Fonua joins fellow Tonga internationals Nili Latu, Sonatane Takulua and Taione Vea in the Falcons squad for the 2016/17 season.
