Tigers crowd sets club record

Leicester Tigers welcomed a club record opening-day attendance of more than 24,000 for first home game of the season on Saturday.

After the team set a club record for a winning comeback Gloucester Rugby during the first weekend of the season, it was the turn of the supporters to make their mark in the fixture against Wasps in Round 2 as a crowd of 24,088 shared in matchday at Welford Road.

This beat the previous mark of 24,000 set against Newcastle Falcons on the first day of the 2009/10 season when Tigers opened the new north stand, now the Holland & Barrett Stand, for the first time.

Saturday’s crowd was also more than double any other attendance in the Aviva Premiership on the day.

As well as the match action on Saturday, supporters of both sides were able to enjoy the sixth annual community event known as Tigers In The Park. This year the free event had a Rio Carnival theme to celebrate the successes of British Olympic and Paralympic athletes with live music and entertainment for four hours building up to kick-off at Welford Road.

Following the redevelopment of the clubhouse end last season, Welford Road now boasts a 25,849 capacity.

Match tickets for home games are available from the Tigers ticket office. Book in person at Welford Road or phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2). Or book online at www.leicestertigers.com
