Win was built on hard work, says Williams

Mike Williams said the tone for Sunday's 34-14 Aviva Premiership victory over Bath was set at the Oval Park training ground during the week.

Williams was named the Aviva Man of the Match as Tigers recorded their first win at Welford Road this season and inflicted a first defeat on their visitors.

The back-rower said Tigers expected an improvement on the performances of the opening three weeks, and said the foundations were laid in training.

“We knew we had to be better,” he said. “It shows the depth and the heart this team has to pull out a performance like that.

“Right from training on Tuesday we said our first 20 minutes needed to be big, we needed to get on top, especially in the forward pack.

“Aggression and physicality were other areas we looked at with Richard Cockerill and (defence coach) Scott Hansen.

“We showed that line-speed and heart to get off the line and win that upfront battle.”

Tigers return to Welford Road on Saturday, October 8 when Worcester Warriors are the visitors in the Aviva Premiership. Match tickets are on general sale now. Book on 0116 319 8888 (option 2), in person at the Welford Road ticket office and online by clicking here
