Unlucky Toomua sidelined by knee injury

Matt Toomua is expected to be sidelined for around six months after suffering a knee ligament injury in the win over Racing 92 at Welford Road on Sunday.

Australia international Toomua, making his home debut for Leicester Tigers, was injured during the first half of the 27-17 victory over the reigning French champions and requires surgery on the damaged knee.

“It is just an accident, Matt stepped and twisted it and his knee has given way,” said Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill.

"He's having surgery today and we're probably looking at six months for recovery from that.

“He is obviously bitterly disappointed – Matt wanted to come in here and make a big impression and we have already seen he is a top-quality player. We're all disappointed for him but that’s the way it falls sometimes.

“Matt will be well looked after and we look forward to having him back in the squad when he is fully recovered."

Cockerill reported that Manu Tuilagi continues to make progress from his groin problem. "We’re just making sure he’s at 100 per cent and when he is ready he will come back in,” he said.
