Spirit kept us in the fight says Cockerill

Richard Cockerill says Leicester Tigers can take some consolation from the "effort and fighting spirit" shown at Saracens on Saturday despite falling to a third league defeat of the season.

Trailing 24-3 after 45 minutes, Tigers claimed a try from replacement George Catchpole and created periods of possession near the Saracens line in the closing stages but were unable to find another breakthrough which would have provided some reward from the game.

“The first half was a little bit disappointing, but the boys never gave up and we stayed in the game in the second half,” said Tigers director of rugby Cockerill.

“Saracens are a very good team, they kicked well, chased well, they put you under pressure and they took their opportunities.

“Before the game we spoke about staying in the battle and we got ourselves back into the game so we were playing for at least a point at the death. The effort and the fighting spirit to stay in the battle was good and the bench gave us a big lift at a key part of the game.

“But the first half was difficult, Sarries controlled it very well. We didn’t kick as well as we would have liked and, if you get stuck in your own half, it is going to be difficult. They are a good side and we looked vulnerable at times, though I thought at times we defended exceptionally well. If you let them on to the front foot, they take a lot of stopping.”

Tigers remain in fourth place in the Aviva Premiership table after seven rounds and now turn attention to Anglo-Welsh Cup fixtures against Bath Rugby away on Friday and then at home to Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday, November 12 before a league sequence against Harlequins at Welford Road, Bristol away and then Northampton Saints at home.

Tickets for home fixtures against the Dragons, Harlequins and Saints are on general sale now. Book in person at Welford Road, by phoning 0116 319 8888 (option 2 ) or click here to book online.
