The new Concrete Rugby programme run by Leicester Tigers is helping to increase interest in the sport in schools as well as delivering important health and lifestyle messages.
The new five-week touch rugby programme, supported by associate partner Aggregate Industries, Concrete Rugby is delivered to pupils in Years 7-9 in schools across the county.
Tigers will be working with 30 classes in 20 schools throughout the season with the idea that the sessions are fun and inclusive, and available to girls and boys. Sessions include touch rugby and cover a range of skills including handling, evasions, decision making, gameplay and tactics plus looking at matchday.
As well as rugby, each session involves a discussion around key messages to do with safety and well-being, including healthy eating and exercise, the dangers of drug and alcohol use, road and track safety, quarry and building site safety, and e-safety and digital safety.
Beaumont Leys School have completed their five weeks and believe the programme has been “a huge success”.
Alex Vann, on behalf of the Beaumont Leys School, said: “Concrete Rugby has been a huge success at Beaumont Leys School, helping us to raise interest, participation and enjoyment of rugby with boys and girls.
“The girls, in particular, have been really keen to try a sport that they see a lot of but don’t get as many opportunities to try.
“Through the programme we have had access to 25 hours of high-quality coaching based around game play and having fun. The girls had the added focus of positive lifestyle messages delivered in a practical situation rather than in a class room which made the learning more relevant.”
There has also been increased interest in the school team as a result of pupils following the programme.
“We’ve tripled the number of boys playing rugby for the school in the first five weeks of term and have had many enquiries about starting a girls’ team,” Vann added.
“I want to thank the Tigers Foundation for their hard work and for the opportunity. I would highly recommend that other schools engage with the programme if they have the opportunity.”
